Telia Sweden given 30 days to comply with net neutrality order

26 Jan 2017

Sweden’s Post & Telecom Agency (Post & Telestyrelsen, PTS) has ordered the country’s largest mobile and fixed network operator Telia to comply with a net neutrality order within 30 days. The PTS decided that Telia’s ‘Social’ (‘data-free’ social media) and ‘Listen’ (‘data-free’ online music) packages violated the EU directive which states that internet service providers should treat all internet traffic equally. The watchdog found that Telia’s exclusion (‘zero-rating’) of certain services/applications from its packages’ data usage volume caps went against the principles of the EU framework. The ruling follows similar regulatory orders imposed on operators in other EU countries including the Netherlands and Hungary.
