HKT backs spectrum trading

23 Jan 2017

Hong Kong fixed and mobile operator Hong Kong Telecom (HKT) has called on the government to implement spectrum trading to aid the development of future 5G cellular services, by allowing operators to freely trade spectrum among themselves. HKT said in a statement: ‘Spectrum trading provides a commercial mechanism to assist the government in clearing spectrum bands and re-farming spectrum.’ It added: ‘The efficient use of spectrum brings important benefits to consumers in terms of broader services availability (e.g. true 5G and the Internet of Things [IoT]), better service quality, lower prices, increased investment and innovation, and enhanced competition.’
