Telia Company said to be mulling a bid for TDC

20 Jan 2017

Swedish telecoms operator Telia Company (previously TeliaSonera) is reportedly planning to place a bid for Denmark’s leading telco by subscribers YouSee (TDC), Reuters writes. According to unnamed sources, Telia would likely have to make a share rights issue to finance the deal, as TDC’s market capitalisation currently stands at roughly DKK30 billion (USD4.2 billion). The deal, however, is unlikely to be approved by the antitrust regulators, as the combination of Telia’s Danish unit and TDC will create a dominant market player. Further, in November 2016 Telia Company acquired Norwegian MVNO market leader Phonero (subject to regulatory approval), though Telia’s potential acquisition of TDC would pose a risk to the approval of the Phonero deal, as TDC also operates in the Norwegian market via its TDC Nordic division.
