SmarTone, the smallest of Hong Kong’s four mobile network operators (MNOs) by subscribers, has said it has conducted the territory’s first demonstration of 5G technology using millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum. The demo, which was carried out with equipment partner Ericsson, achieved a data throughput of 5.7Gbps over a 5G prototype through the use of 4×4 MIMO antenna technology in the 15GHz band, Telecom Asia reports. SmarTone says it eventually plans to upgrade the 5G prototype to support 8×8 MIMO antenna technology, which will double the transmission speed to over 10Gbps. The partners also announced plans to open a 5G innovation lab in Hong Kong in mid-2017.
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, SmarTone signed a five-year deal in November 2016 contracting Ericsson for the supply of core network and radio access network (RAN) equipment to pave the way for future 5G services.
