AIS, Huawei announce Massive MIMO breakthrough

16 Jan 2017

Thai mobile operator Advanced Info Service (AIS) has announced what it has termed a ‘landmark breakthrough in the technological advancement of Massive Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) 32T 32R in 4G frequency division duplex LTE (FD-LTE)’. The cellco, working in conjunction with Chinese vendor Huawei, claims that the trial represents a continuation of the 4.5G standard jointly developed by the two companies in March 2016, which utilised ‘beamforming’ technology to increase 4G network capacity by five-to-eight times.

TeleGeography notes that beamforming is a signal processing technique that directs signals from multiple antennas towards where mobile customers are situated.
