Xplornet blasts off with Echostar XIX

19 Dec 2016

The Globe & Mail reports that Canadian rural broadband leader Xplornet will soon expand its capacity for internet users via the new Echostar XIX satellite, owned by Hughes Network Systems, which was launched into orbit on Sunday. Xplornet agreed to pay over CAD200 million (USD150 million) for a lifetime lease of Echostar’s Canadian broadband capacity. Xplornet is also investing more than CAD275 million to lease the Canadian capacity on another new high-throughput satellite, ViaSat-2, owned by Viasat Inc, which is expected to be launched early next year, and says that the two new launches will triple its current satellite capacity on three existing satellites.
