Movistar Argentina claims first Antarctic 4G

19 Dec 2016

Telefonica Moviles Argentina (Movistar) claims that it is the first to launch a 4G LTE mobile network in Antarctica, having switched on 3G/4G base stations in Marambio Base, a permanent research location in Argentine Antarctic territory. 70 permanent Marambio inhabitants and 5,000 or so annual tourist visitors will gain access to mobile data transfer speeds of up to 20Mbps, compared to the 1.5Mbps peaks previously possible, the Spanish-owned company said. Earlier this month, TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate reported that Movistar Argentina’s 4G user base had reached 4.4 million, served by more than 3,600 LTE base stations across 500 cities/towns nationwide – up from 300 locations claimed at the start of the year – having launched LTE services in December 2014.
