Movistar Mexico has confirmed widespread speculation that it has signed a nationwide roaming agreement with market leader Telcel. In a press brief, the Telefonica-backed firm confirmed that the paperwork has been filed with industry regulator the Federal Telecommunications Institute (Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones, Ifetel), enabling the pact to take effect from 7 December.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Telcel, which is controlled by America Movil (AM), claimed a 66.5% share of the Mexican mobile market as at 30 September 2016, placing it well ahead of fellow mobile network operators (MNOs) Movistar (23.7%) and AT&T Mexico (9.8%).
