Ukraine’s third largest mobile operator Lifecell – a wholly owned subsidiary of Turkcell – has signed a memorandum of cooperation for the development of 5G services with vendors Ericsson and Huawei. Lifecell’s CEO stated that the first phase of the collaboration will be the development of ideas and models of implementation for 5G services in Ukraine, while the next step will focus on the technical and software aspects of the project via experimental 5G platform launches. As reported by Interfax, the chairman of Ukraine’s telecoms regulator the NCCIR commented on Lifecell’s announcement, saying that the state will do everything it can to facilitate 5G testing, whilst predicting that ‘4G will be introduced in Ukraine in 2017, and 5G in 2019-2020’. It was also highlighted that Ericsson and Huawei have included Ukraine in a list of ‘ten-15 countries’ to hold 5G technology experiments.
