Entel, Claro appeal against biometric verification rules

5 Dec 2016

Mobile providers Claro Peru and Entel Peru have filed an appeal to overturn rules introduced by telecoms regulator the Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Organismo Supervisor de Inversion Privada en Telecommuniciones, Osiptel) earlier this year, under which operators will be obliged to register the biometric data of their pre-paid customers from January 2017, TeleSemana reports. The duo filed their case with the National Institute for the Defence of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Instituto Nacional de Defensa de la Competencia y de la Proteccion de la Propiedad Intelectual, INDECOPI), arguing that the cost the companies must pay the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Registro Nacional de Identificacion y Estado Civil, RENIEC) to verify their customers’ identities is too high.
