China Mobile sets out schedule for 5G

30 Nov 2016

The world’s largest mobile provider by subscribers, China Mobile, has set out a timeline for its 5G deployment, C114 writes. The cellco will initially concentrate on utilising spectrum in sub-6GHz bands, but will test higher frequency ranges after the first 18 months. In 2017 the operator will build seven experimental base stations in four or five cities, before expanding to 20 base stations the following year, when it will begin testing end-to-end commercial products and testing the pre-commercial network. In 2019 the operator plans to ramp up the programme, expanding the scale of the 5G trial network, with a view to deploying 10,000 5G base stations by the end of 2020, paving the way for a commercial launch shortly afterwards.
