The government of Sri Lanka, in conjunction with the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA), has chosen Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) to be the full communication service provider and infrastructure provider to the next phase of the Lanka Government Network (LGN 2.0). The project is designed to provide ultra-high speed services to government institutions over a single unified network. The ministry and the ICTA said they awarded the LGN 2.0 contract to SLT as it is considered the only licence holder in the country with ‘the ability to deal with last mile fibre-optic solutions as well as the national backbone network’. The company has already deployed LGN 1.0 – setting up a fibre-optic network covering 315 government establishments.
