China Mobile HK, Huawei claim world’s first 2.3GHz TDD Massive MIMO test

China Mobile Hong Kong and equipment supplier Huawei have carried out what they say is the world’s first trial of 2.3GHz time division duplex (TDD) Massive MIMO technology, as well as a demonstration of TDD and frequency division duplex (FDD) carrier aggregation, achieving download speeds of 1Gbps while also enhancing network capacity and coverage in heavily populated areas. The cellco operates a converged FDD and TDD 4G LTE network in Hong Kong, and as previously reported by CommsUpdate, last month it contracted Huawei to upgrade the network with LTE-Advanced Pro (LTE-A Pro) 4.5G technology to allow it to offer gigabit services and prepare for future 5G evolution. LTE-A Pro was approved as a 4.5G standard by industry body 3GPP in October 2015.

Parent company, China Mobile, has meanwhile also been carrying out Massive MIMO trials with Huawei in mainland China using 2.6GHz TDD spectrum.

In the same announcement, China Mobile Hong Kong also said it is continuing with its upgrade and expansion programme, having increased the number of base stations in service by 12% over the past year, while enhancing its radio network and replacing core network equipment to build an advanced NFV (Network Functions Virtualisation) core network. The company expects to have upgraded 60% of its base stations by the end of 2016 and 90% by the second quarter of 2017, and it says it is also carrying out work to improve its network coverage in MTR underground rail stations.
