Vodafone Egypt in talks with Telecom Egypt over possible national roaming deal

10 Nov 2016

Vodafone Egypt’s CEO Stefano Gastaut has confirmed that his company is currently negotiating with Telecom Egypt over the possibility of a national roaming deal, Daily News Egypt reports. In addition, the executive noted that Vodafone Egypt has yet to make a final decision on whether to acquire the international gateway licence offered to it alongside the 4G and fixed line concessions which it agreed to purchase last month.

With Mr Gastaut confirming that Vodafone Egypt has already settled half of the cost of its 4G licence in local currency, he noted that the other half – which is to be paid in US dollars – will be paid within the next few days. While the cellco has yet to receive the 5MHz of LTE-suitable spectrum it is gaining as part of its 4G concession, it has been confirmed that Vodafone Egypt is currently providing LTE-based connectivity in some areas as a trial, with downlink speeds of 73Mbps said to have been achieved.
