South Korea’s KT Corp has outlined plans to commercialise 5G services by 2019, a year ahead of its initial timetable, The Korea Times reports. The operator’s announcement of its updated launch plans was made as the company detailed its 5G technical specifications, after reaching a consensus on these with global network and mobile chipset manufacturers including Nokia, Samsung Electronics, Intel and Qualcomm.
Commenting on the matter, Seo Chang-seok, vice president of KT’s network strategy division, was cited as saying: ‘We have been on an upward track to push for setting a global standard for the upcoming 5G era after we established the 5G-SIG in November last year … The 5G specifications will serve as a backbone for our 5G demonstration plan at the upcoming PyeongChang Winter Olympics in 2018.’
