Shaw puts its TV eggs in FreeRange basket

1 Nov 2016

Canadian quadruple-play cableco Shaw Communications has launched a mobile live and on-demand TV service under the ‘FreeRange TV’ banner, based on Comcast’s X1 technology platform, offered free of charge to existing Shaw cable customers. FreeRange boasts 80 live (linear) TV channels and an on-demand content library of 30,000 titles, viewable online or offline, whilst premium sports channel content is included. Shaw recently acquired Wind Mobile, Canada’s fourth largest mobile operator, giving it the potential for additional synergies in the mobile services/content field.

Last year Shaw partnered rival cableco Rogers Communications to launch ‘Shomi’, an OTT streaming-based subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service, to fight competition from streaming specialists such as Netflix and Hulu, but Shomi did not include linear TV channels.
