TIM trials 500Mbps 4.5G system

24 Oct 2016

Telecom Italia, which offers fixed and mobile services under the TIM brand, has achieved speeds of more than 500Mbps via a single data connection during a field trial of 4.5G LTE technology in Turin. The firm says it achieved the improved data speeds by broadening the spectrum used and enhancing spectral efficiency through evolutions in the antenna transmission systems and coding and modulation techniques. It collaborated with Ericsson and Qualcomm on the trials.

TIM currently has 300Mbps LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) 4G services live in eight Italian cities using tri-band carrier aggregation in the 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands, but says 500Mbps download speeds will not be available commercially on its network until compatible devices are launched at the end of this year.
