Armenian broadband and mobile provider UCOM has selected Software Defined Access (SDA) developer Calix to provide it with its suite of AXOS, Compass cloud, and E-series systems, as it helps to converge UCOM’s nationwide fibre access networks into one combined 10Gbps business, mobile backhaul, and residential services network. Under the plan, Calix aims to provide UCOM with an integrated fibre-optic network, with initial trials of Calix AXOS next generation passive optical network 2 (NG-PON2) systems scheduled for early 2017. The altnet was at the forefront of the development of fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services in the country and, working with Calix, is hoping to help transform the domestic telecoms landscape.
‘Calix has been instrumental in the development of our FTTH network, which we believe to be the most extensive and advanced in Armenia,’ said Aleksander Yesayan, business development director and deputy CEO at Ucom. ’Our vision has always been to become Armenia’s most advanced service provider, blazing the trail in both technology and services, and NG-PON2 is the perfect vehicle to extend fibre services for businesses and connect our own mobile cell sites. The Calix partnership enables UCOM to take this vision to the next level, once again transforming the broadband landscape in our country.’
