Moldovan watchdog approves Orange takeover of Sun Communications

19 Oct 2016

Moldovan antitrust regulator the Competition Council has granted its approval to Orange Group’s takeover of cable provider Sun Communications. ‘The Competition Council had assessed the economic concentration from the viewpoint of its compatibility with a normal competition environment in accordance with the regulation on economic concentration and found that it does not create significant obstacles to competition on the Moldovan market or on a significant part of it, especially by creating or consolidating a dominant position,’ the regulator said.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, Orange agreed to acquire Sun Communications in June 2016 for an undisclosed sum. Established in 1993, Sun Communications is the largest cable company by subscribers in Moldova and offers cable TV, broadband and VoIP services to roughly 138,000 subscribers in Chisinau, Balti and Cahul. Its DOCSIS 3.0-enabled HFC network meanwhile is capable of delivering maximum download speeds of 300Mbps in Chisinau and Balti.
