Vietnamobile licensed under new JSC model, signs 3G expansion deals

14 Oct 2016

Vietnamobile, Vietnam’s fourth largest wireless operator by subscribers, has received three licences from the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC), following the transformation of its operating model from a business corporation contract (BCC) to a joint stock company (JSC) earlier this year. Vietnam Investment Review reports that the permits authorise Vietnamobile to establish a telecoms network, provide telecoms services and utilise 2G and 3G spectrum under the new JSC operating model. At the same time, Vietnamobile has announced the signing of contracts with equipment vendors Ericsson and ZTE Corporation for the expansion of the cellco’s 3G network to around 90% of the population by the end of 2017.

‘Over the past ten years, Vietnamobile has been constantly striving for excellence and has overcome many challenges: from difficulties common to new entrants to the telecom market to issues in deployment of CDMA technology in a market accustomed to GSM,’ commented Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Phan Tam, adding: ‘Although there remain difficulties and challenges, Vietnamobile can be confident to set foot on the Vietnamese telecom market, and can be proud of being the only foreign-invested network operating in Vietnam.’
