Telefonica Espana has recorded downlink speeds of up to 800Mbps in technology trials conducted in partnership with vendors Nokia and Qualcomm. In a press release outlining its achievement, the Spanish operator noted that to reach such speeds it had deployed 4×4 multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) and 256 QAM technology, while it had also utilised a test terminal equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X16 LTE modem. On the back of the trials Telefonica Espana, which offers its services under the Movistar banner, has said it intends to introduce the aforementioned technologies to its live mobile network ‘gradually’.

Joaquin Mata, Telefonica Espana’s director of operations and networks, said of the trials: ‘The test we have done today is a milestone in Telefonica’s commitment to bringing the best capabilities of mobile broadband networks and better services to customers.’
