Romanian quadruple-play operator RCS&RDS (Digi) has announced that it will launch commercial 2100MHz 4G LTE services on 20 October in Oradea and Pitesti, augmenting its existing 2600MHz TD-LTE services. By January 2017 Digi says its commercial 2100MHz FDD-LTE network will cover cities/areas including Bucharest, Cluj, Timisoara, Brasov, Craiova, Constanta, Iasi, Arad, Sibiu, Galati, Targu Mures, Satu Mare, Ramnicu Valcea, Drobeta Turnu Severin, Resita, Slatina, Hunedoara, Rasnov and Zarnesti. Although Digi already offers around 30 smartphones for use on its existing TD-LTE network, the switch-on of 2100MHz FDD services will extend availability to a greater range of smartphones – particularly in the mass-produced budget segment – and step up competitive pressure on its larger mobile rivals Orange, Vodafone and Telekom Romania. As reported by ZF.ro, Digi plans to continue expanding the LTE-2100 network throughout the first half of 2017 to cover various other localities including coastal resorts, deploying over 1,100 base stations. The company also continues to expand its 2600MHz TD-LTE footprint, expecting to reach nearly 1,000 2600MHz base stations by the end of this year. From the commercial launch date, 4G data transfer via the 2100MHz spectrum (previously utilised exclusively for Digi’s 900MHz/2100MHz 3G network) will be available on all Digi user packages that permit 4G access.
