US cableco RCN has announced that it is poised to launch Gigabit broadband connectivity in Chicago, with Skokie and Lincolnwood the first areas to receive the higher download speeds. RCN intends to offer internet speeds of up to 1Gbps in all of its serviceable areas in and around Chicago, it says, delivered via DOCSIS 3.1 technology. RCN’s primary service areas include Boston, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. Chris Fenger, chief operating office for RCN, commented: ‘The capacity provided by 1 Gigabit is massive, and it more than keeps up with the explosive growth of internet usage … This continued trend confirms that DOCSIS 3.1 is a critical technology for the future, enabling not only Gigabit internet speeds, but also future enhancements such as IP video and other advanced services.’
