TIM Brasil taps Intelsat for satellite throughput solution

21 Sep 2016

TIM Participacoes (TIM Brasil) has enlisted Luxembourg-based Intelsat to incorporate its EpicNG high-throughput satellite (HTS) services into its network infrastructure, providing expanded connectivity throughout Brazil. Under the terms of the multi-year agreement, TIM says that it will become the first mobile network operator in the country to incorporate an HTS solution. The new kit has a backwards-compatible design that allows the use of existing hardware, the vendor notes, while the solution will augment TIM’s existing C-band satellite network.

Marcelo Duarte, TIM Brasil wholesale director, commented: ‘Our goal is to provide more throughput, and achieve high penetration within our service territories … We will also be able to deliver connectivity in remote and less-densely-populated regions of Brazil where terrestrial infrastructure is difficult to efficiently deploy’.
