Liberty Global still eyeing Polish expansion

20 Sep 2016

Mike Fries, the chief executive of Liberty Global, has confirmed that the group is still considering acquisitions in Poland to beef up its existing cableco business in the country. According to a report from Rzeczpospolita, potential targets named by Fries include cable TV rival Multimedia Polska and the country’s second largest cellco by subscribers, P4, which trades under the ‘Play’ brand. Liberty Global has forged two deals in Europe this year which has seen it enlarge its cable operations to encompass wireless services, with Ziggo in the Netherlands agreeing a joint venture with Vodafone and Telenet of Belgium acquiring local cellco BASE. While UPC does have a limited MVNO business in Poland, a tie-up with Play would enable it to provide a fully converged range of fixed and mobile services to its customers.
