XL Axiata sees UMTS-900 as key to boosting 3G coverage

XL Axiata intends to use UMTS-900 technology to optimise its 3G coverage in some parts of Indonesia, especially in Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi. IndoTelko quotes the firm’s director and chief service management officer, Yessie D. Yosetya, as saying that XL’s vision is to roll out UMTS-900 as part of the government-led broadband development programme designed to boost internet access in remote areas, adding that 900MHz-based 3G is fast enough to provide mobile broadband in regions where other options are not available or reliable. Yosetya notes that UMTS-900 will be able to support HSPA+ with peak speeds of up to 21Mbps.
