South African cellco MTN has decided to pull the plug on its mobile payments platform Mobile Money, two weeks after it stopped signing new subscribers in order to review the feasibility of the service. The operator said in a press release: ’Following much deliberation, MTN South Africa has taken a decision to decommission its Mobile Money offering due to lack of commercial viability.’ MTN’s Mobile Money platform – which was launched in 2012 – has approximately 140,000 customers, down from two million users in 2014.
