The Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Organismo Supervisor de Inversion Privada en Telecommuniciones, Osiptel) has disconnected 842,646 pre-paid lines belonging to 22,240 subscribers, after the users failed to verify their accounts through the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status’s (Registro Nacional de Identificacion y Estado Civil, RENIEC’s) fingerprint biometric verification system. The blocked SIMs belonged to customers with more than ten lines apiece, and the next stage of the verification process will focus on users with between five and ten pre-paid lines. Unverified SIMs in the aforementioned category will be partially suspended on 23 January 2017, preventing them from making outgoing calls or sending messages, and completely blocked on 7 February.
Of the 842,646 disconnected lines, the vast majority (82.8%) were attributed to Claro, with that cellco representing 14,547 subscribers and 697,980 lines. Of the remaining lines, Entel and Movistar lines totalled 78,547 and 63,340 respectively, whilst Bitel made up the final 2,779.
