Portuguese fixed line operator PT Portugal (MEO) has introduced a new 1Gbps broadband service over its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) infrastructure. According to a company press release the service will be available at an introductory price of EUR99.99 (USD112.30) per month, with customers receiving a 50% discount on a two-year subscription, if they agree to the company’s direct debit/e-bill payment arrangement. The new broadband package supersedes the telco’s 400Mbps peak download speed offer, which currently retails for EUR99.99 per month.
TeleGeography notes that PT Portugal has been investing in FTTH since 2008 and unveiled its first fibre-based access service, ‘MEO Fibra’, in May 2009. As per the last coverage metric provided by parent company Altice Group, the telco had passed 2.588 million homes by 30 June 2016, a figure which is expected to rise to 5.3 million by 2020.
