Sri Lankan telecoms operator Dialog Axiata has launched the country’s first voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) service enabling ultra-high quality voice and video calls over its 4G networks. Dialog claims to operates Sri Lanka’s widest mobile 4G network based on FDD-LTE technology, as well as a fixed 4G system based on TD-LTE. The carrier says that VoLTE will deliver three times more voice and data capacity than 3G UMTS and up to six times more than 2G GSM. Furthermore, it claims its platform is an improvement on a standard ‘non-optimised’ VoIP/LTE alternative, as it ‘frees up bandwidth because VoLTE’s packet headers are smaller than those of the [sub-optimal option]’. VoLTE will be available at all locations covered by Dialog’s mobile 4G network in Sri Lanka.
