Kcell launches LTE in four cities

1 Sep 2016

Kazakhstan’s mobile market leader Kcell has launched commercial 4G services in the cities of Almaty, Atyrau, Aktau and Shymkent. The launch was accompanied by yesterday’s announcement that Kcell is to share its LTE infrastructure with second-placed operator Beeline, giving Kcell coverage in a further nine cities: Astana, Karaganda, Zhezkazgan, Kostanay, Oskemen, Borovoe, Pavlodar, Semey and Satpayev. Together, the Kcell and Beeline networks cover more than 30% of the population. Kcell’s 4G network, which was supplied by Ericsson, operates in the 800MHz and 1800MHz bands, providing peak download speeds of up to 100Mbps.

Arti Ots, CEO of Kcell, commented: ‘Since we launched our first pilot 4G LTE hotspots in shopping malls in February 2016, more than 200,000 unique subscribers have tested our 4G LTE internet services. Today more than 25% of Kcell customers are using 4G LTE smartphones, so we are delighted to be launching this 4G LTE network.’
