TFL to deploy FTTH/VDSL to Denarau, Nadi

22 Aug 2016

Telecom Fiji Limited (TFL), the fixed and broadband operator wholly owned by Amalgamated Telecom Holdings (ATH), has confirmed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Denarau Corporation to roll out fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) and VDSL technology for residential customers on Denarau Island and Nadi. The deployment of super-fast broadband in these key tourist destinations forms part of TFL’s national broadband strategy which it says is ‘focused on ensuring greater accessibility, availability and affordability of internet and high speed broadband connectivity to the people and businesses across Fiji’.

In a press release, the telco said that the FTTH upgrade will see fibre extended directly to customers’ homes to provide peak download speeds of up to 100Mbps, while VDSL will also be used in certain areas to improve the reliability of the connection and deliver peak 50Mbps throughput. ‘We are working towards providing high speed, seamless internet services to our customers and are excited to deliver the next evolution of super-fast broadband connectivity to Denarau area where there is a high contribution to the national economy,’ said TFL chief executive officer Mothilal De Silva, adding: ‘We strongly believe Fiji follows closely behind the trends of the developed world in which both fibre-to-the-curb and fibre-to-the-home deliver high speed broadband access. In both these technologies that are being rolled out across Fiji, we bring the exchange closer to premises while effectively utilising our copper and fibre network infrastructure for last mile access.’

TFL has seen an explosion in demand for triple-play voice, internet and TV services and says it is using a range of complementary fixed and wireless technology platforms to suit different market needs. For example, it is rolling out 4G LTE in the 700MHz band to provide a wide coverage area and enhance performance compared to the higher frequency bands it currently utilises for mobile.
