Telefonica de Argentina (TdA) has reportedly signed a contract with state-owned telecoms infrastructure firm ARSAT to lease a 7,400km stretch of the in-deployment Federal Fibre-Optic Network (Red Federal de Fibra Optica, REFEFO). The telco intends to use the network to extend its reach into underserved areas and also to provide cellular backhaul for its Movistar wireless unit. According to media outlet Clarin, the contract – which is said to be worth more than USD100 million per annum – encompasses Santa Cruz, Chubut, Rio Negro, Mendoza, Neuquen, San Juan, Santiago del Estero, Chaco, Jujuy, Misiones and Buenos Aires. Clarin quotes Rodrigo de Loredo, president of ARSAT, as saying: ‘This [deal] allows us to achieve the goal of sustainability, working in an integrated manner with private operators’.
