State-backed telecoms behemoth PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) booked net income of IDR9.926 trillion (USD757.9 million) in the first half of 2016, up 33.3% when compared to the figure of IDR7.447 trillion reported in the same period of 2015. First-half revenue increased by 15.6% on an annualised basis to IDR56.454 trillion and double-digit growth was also reported for operating profits (up 31.5% at IDR19.887 trillion) and EBITDA (+22.8%, IDR28.795 trillion); EBITDA margin of 51% marked a three points improvement year-on-year. The carrier said strong growth in the January-June period was driven by data, internet & IT services which surged by more than 50% y-o-y and contributed 40.1% to total revenue in the period under review. Capital expenditures amounted to approximately IDR13.7 trillion, which was used to support the group’s mobile business – mobile division Telkomsel installed no fewer than 15,000 new base stations in 1H16, of which 91% were 3G/4G equipped – as well as in backbone network developments and investments in submarine cable projects SEA-ME-WE5 and SEA-US.
Operationally, Telkom closed out June 2016 with 157.388 million mobile subscribers, up 9.2% y-o-y, of which 3.919 million were post-paid (15.7%), 49.850 million Telkomsel Flash customers (+48.2%) and 10.628 million POTS fixed lines in service, up from 10.190 million at 30 June 2015.
