Mozambique government plans TDM and mCel merger

29 Jul 2016

The government of Mozambique has unveiled plans to merge publicly-owned mobile operator Mocambique Cellular (mCel) and state-backed fixed line provider Telecomunicacoes de Mocambique (TDM). The deal will help cut costs and will also enable the combined operation to market a range of converged fixed-mobile products. According to a report from MacauHub, the government is now working with the Institute of State Shareholdings Management (Igepe) and the boards of both firms ‘to present a proposal that is feasible’. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, TDM is 90% state owned, with the remainder sold to management and employees in 2014; mCel is currently a wholly owned subsidiary of TDM.
