Ukrtelecom updates progress on xDSL/GPON modernisation project

18 Jul 2016

Ukraine’s dominant national fixed network operator Ukrtelecom has issued an update on the progress of its network modernisation project in partnership with China’s Huawei. Its website says that 389 active distribution cabinets from Huawei – purchased via a credit line from China Development Bank – are currently being deployed to replace 46 old cabinets, whilst by the end of 2016 Ukrtelecom plans to invest USD50 million in the project. The custom-made equipment will enable the provision of internet access services at speeds up to 20Mbps (ADSL2+), 50Mbps (VDSL) and 1Gbps (GPON fibre), with the first batch of cabinets serving around 170,000 subscribers. Similar equipment from Huawei is already serving 12,500 subscribers in Odessa, having been installed in place of three obsolete Ukrtelecom distribution cabinets in a pilot phase.
