A1, the Austrian subsidiary of Telekom Austria Group, has revealed that it is investing EUR500 million (USD551.5 million) this year to extend broadband internet coverage in urban and rural areas by upgrading both its fixed line and 4G LTE networks. The firm is using so-called ‘hybrid boost technology’ to combine both fixed and mobile technologies to create a new, single product, which offers maximum down/upload speeds of 100Mbps/20Mbps and is able to reach 92% of Austrians. The new ‘A1 Hybrid Box’ combines a broadband WLAN modem and a 4G LTE module; customers are able choose what internet speed they would like, and A1 provides the appropriate technology combination.
Commenting on the new product, A1’s Director of Service Network Planning, Armin Sumesgutner, said: ‘This smart combination of two technologies offers a number of advantages: with A1 fixed net internet A1 customers enjoy fixed net, undivided bandwidth. When required, the Hybrid Box boosts performance with 4G LTE, delivering speeds of up to 100Mbps. This enables us to reach more Austrians than ever before with broadband internet.’
