Djezzy extends 3G footprint to 41 provinces; aims for full coverage by year-end

Algerian mobile operator Optimum Telecom Algerie (OTA), which provides services under the brand name Djezzy, has expanded its 3G network to seven new wilayas (provinces), namely Tipaza, Biskra, Laghouat, Sidi Bel Abbes, Oum El Bouaghi, Tebessa and El Tarf. The latest expansion brings the total number of wilayas covered by the cellco’s 3G network to 41, and the firm says it aims to achieve coverage of all 48 Algerian wilayas by the end of the year.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Djezzy received final authorisation to launch commercial 3G services in December 2013 and switched on its network in seven wilayas in July 2014, seven months behind rivals Mobilis and Ooredoo. Earlier this year, Djezzy was authorised by the government to extend its 3G services to all of the country’s wilayas.
