24 Jun 2016

Russian state-backed telco Rostelecom and Huawei Marine have begun constructing a high speed submarine fibre cable section connecting the Far East peninsula of Kamchatka with the island of Sakhalin. The 900km section will form the second phase of Rostelecom’s new Far East cable route connecting Kamchatka-Sakhalin-Magadan. Phase One (Sakhalin-Magadan) was completed in 2015 alongside terrestrial network extensions in Kamchatka. The new cable section will be commissioned in Q1 2017, according to Huawei Marine. System capacity is 400Gbps, upgradeable in the future to 8Tbps.
