Spain’s Telefonica and Chinese vendor Huawei have signed a 5G and next generation radio access network (NG-RAN) joint innovation agreement, the latter has revealed in a press release, calling the development ‘a further cooperation step of [the two companies] on 5G, based on the strategic Memorandum of Understanding [MoU] signed in Hong Kong on November 2015’. The cooperation covers CloudRAN, 5G Radio User Centric No Cell, 5G Core Re-Architect and Massive MIMO innovation projects, with these aiming to improve spectrum efficiency and build a cloud-native architecture. 5G Core architecture evolution and research on CloudRAN are expected to be the major cooperation areas between Telefonica and Huawei.
Commenting on the agreement, Enrique Blanco, Telefonica’s chief technology officer, was cited as saying: ‘We are very pleased to have reached this further agreement with Huawei to keep cooperating on 5G and the next generation RAN.
