MegaFon achieves 1Gbps in tests, claims '5G' level performance

20 Jun 2016

Russian cellco MegaFon, in conjunction with Huawei and Qualcomm, has conducted tests demonstrating gigabit-speed wireless transmission on a commercial network, presenting the results as ‘5G’ type performance. The tests involved LTE aggregation of 60MHz of spectrum using 2600MHz and 1800MHz bands, 256-QAM modulation and 4×4 MIMO technology, achieving a top speed of 1.06Gbps. It was noted that the highest speeds were restricted to distances only a few metres from the base station, whilst commercial consumer devices able to utilise the theoretical peak speeds, such as Qualcomm’s ‘gigabit class’ Snapdragon X16 LTE modem, are expected to be available to MegaFon users in 2017.
