Virgin Media’s GBP3bn FTTP expansion to reach Wrexham, Chester

13 Jun 2016

Virgin Media has announced that Wrexham and Chester are the next two UK cities in line for fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband deployment, as part of its GBP3 billion (USD4.27 billion) ‘Project Lightning’ network expansion. The Wrexham rollout marks the first time that Virgin has extended the upgrade programme into Wales, the company notes. In total, Virgin will connect 24,000 homes and businesses in Wrexham, and 45,000 in Chester. The network will deliver downlink transmission speeds of up to 200Mbps to residential customers and 300Mbps speeds to businesses.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, the cableco plans to add four million additional homes and businesses to its network by 2019, increasing its footprint to 17 million premises in the process. The first wave of rollouts were set to encompass parts of Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, West Yorkshire, Devon and East Sussex.
