Liberty Global linked with Multimedia Polska

13 Jun 2016

US-backed, UK-headquartered cable operator group Liberty Global is on the acquisition trail again, with reports linking it with Polish cableco Multimedia Polska. Liberty Global already owns Poland’s largest cable provider by subscribers, UPC, so it is thought that any deal would require the sale of some assets in order to gain approval from the local competition watchdog. Reuters quotes an unnamed source as saying: ‘UPC is in advanced talks with Multimedia, although there are still a few things to settle, including the price, which has always been key for Multimedia owners.’ Multimedia is currently 51.93% owned by M2 Investments, which is itself owned by the cableco’s co-chairmen Tomek Ulatowski and Ygal Ozechov, while Cyprus-based Emerging Ventures Ltd (EVL) has a 46.49% stake which is held via Tri Media Holdings. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Multimedia had 533,084 retail broadband subscribers and 827,200 cable TV customers at the end of March 2016.
