Jamaica’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, Digicel, has launched the island’s first commercial 4G LTE network following a JMD6 billion (USD50 million) investment. Services are initially available in Kingston and parts of Montego Bay, though the firm says coverage will be extended to other towns in the coming months. Digicel currently has over two million customers, of which 1.3 million are smartphone users, and the firm says demand for mobile broadband services continues to ‘skyrocket’. The network operates in the 700MHz band. Digicel and its sole rival Flow (formerly LIME) are to see further competition shortly in the shape of start-up operator Caricel which is currently deploying its own LTE infrastructure.
