EU probe into Wind-3 Italia deal extended to September

10 Jun 2016

The EU’s competition commission has postponed its decision on the proposed merger between Italian telcos Wind Telecomunicazioni and 3 Italia. The watchdog is now due to deliver a ruling on the planned EUR21.8 billion (USD24.7 billion) tie-up by 8 September rather than the previous deadline of 18 August. 3 Italia’s owner CK Hutchison of Hong Kong and Wind shareholder VimpelCom are looking to divest certain assets to help pave the way for the creation of a new mobile operator in Italy to ensure that the sector remains a four-player market, and the EU has decided to lengthen its investigation in order to study the new concessions. Swisscom’s Italian ISP subsidiary Fastweb, French telco Iliad and Jamaica-based wireless group Digicel have all been linked as potential new mobile market entrants.
