7 Jun 2016

Vodacom Tanzania has switched on its 4G LTE network in Dar es Salaam, using equipment supplied by Nokia. The Finnish vendor is deploying and managing Vodacom’s network, and has also supplied 2G and 3G equipment for the operator. The network is said to be capable of delivering downlink transmission speeds of up to 70Mbps, although Vodacom anticipates 200Mbps download speeds as an ‘eventual goal’. According to a map published on the cellco’s website, coverage is available as far north as Kunduchi, and as far south as Mbagala.

Vodacom managing director Ian Ferrao commented: ‘We have partnered with Nokia to roll out the fastest 4G network in Tanzania, with all sites connected to our metropolitan fibre network. All major cities in Tanzania can expect to have Vodacom’s 4G network rolled out in the future … Once spectrum becomes available, we will accelerate our rollout plans.’
