Italian telco TIM has signed an agreement with Ericsson to collaborate on the ‘5G for Italy’ programme, which aims to ‘create an open ecosystem for the research and implementation of innovative projects enabled by … the next generation of wireless technology’. TIM says the initiative will bring together industries, the public sector, universities, research centres, local authorities and small and medium enterprises, and will cover areas including the smart city, the Internet of Things, health services, transport and smart agriculture. The partnership also aims to facilitate the transition from existing mobile networks to 5G, supporting the standardisation work to make 5G a global standard. Mario Di Mauro, Head of Strategy & Innovation at TIM, commented: ‘This programme allows us to develop the new network simultaneously to those services and applications that in the near future will be enabled by 5G for the digital transformation needs of Italian companies and the development of a new multimedia communication for the consumers.’
