Iliad and Sky interested in Italian opportunity

Italian telcos Wind Telecomunicazioni and 3 Italia are reportedly in talks with a number of parties with a view to facilitating the entry of a new mobile network operator. VimpelCom subsidiary Wind and CK Hutchison’s 3 are looking to merge their operations in Italy, in a deal which will reduce the mobile market from four players to three, but there is some concern that European Commission (EC) regulators could block the deal over competition fears. The Financial Times reports that the two operators have held talks with French telco Iliad and pay-TV provider Sky about a possible deal to transfer spare spectrum to a new operator. Italian ISP Fastweb has also expressed an interest in becoming a fourth mobile network operator.
