Mexican telecoms giant America Movil (AM) is eyeing deals for Argentina’s state owned broadband provider ARSAT and Buenos Aires-based cableco TeleCentro, local news site Pagina 12 reports. AM boss Carlos Slim is said to have held a private meeting with Argentine president Mauricio Macri to analyse investment opportunities in ARSAT. If a deal comes to fruition, AM could secure a strategic stake in the smaller firm’s in-deployment Federal Fibre-Optic Network (Red Federal de Fibra Optica, REFEFO), as well as capacity on the national ARSAT-2 satellite.
It is unclear, however, whether or not Slim’s company – which offers services in Argentina via its Claro and Telmex Argentina subsidiaries – is in formal negotiations with TeleCentro owner Alberto Pierri. TeleCentro was first awarded a pay-TV licence in 1990, before introducing a triple-play product suite in April 2008, and deploying DOCSIS 3.0 technology in March 2013.
