Taiwan's APT reaches 1m 4G subs milestone

18 May 2016

Taiwanese cellular operator Asia Pacific Telecom (APT) has announced that it has reached the one million LTE subscriber milestone, some 17 months after its December 2014 network launch. According to DigiTimes.com, APT has also initiated voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) technology, with six smartphone vendors supplying a total of ten VoLTE-compatible handsets.

Previously, APT selected French-US vendor Alcatel-Lucent to build an LTE overlay network that would enable APT to be the first service provider in Taiwan to offer VoLTE back in March 2014. In the event, rival operator Ambit Microsystems pipped APT to the post, when it switched on the country’s first VoLTE service in May 2015.
